PRESS RELEASE

From: Chief Joseph T. Rutigliano
Date: December 12, 2001

Wood-Ridge Police Chief Joseph T. Rutigliano has announced the arrest of Ziyad Abughaida, age 25, of South River, New Jersey, on 1st degree Robbery and 1st degree Aggravated Assault charges.  Also arrested was John Sturdy, Jr., age 31, of East Brunswick, New Jersey, on 4th degree Obstruction and 4th degree Hindrance charges.  The arrests came about as a result of the investigation conducted by Detective John Korin and assisted by Det./Sgt. Scott Drotos and Det. William Wolfsohn.

On August 1 at 11:30 a.m., the female victim was about to enter the bank located on Valley Boulevard at Windsor Road to make a deposit of her business proceeds when she was attacked by Abughaida.  In the struggle he inflicted a serious injury to her face.  With the help of Sturdy he was able to flee the area in a waiting vehicle.  The proceeds of the robbery were approximately $10,000.00.

The Honorable George Malhiot of the Wood-Ridge Municipal Court set the following bails: Abughaida, 1st Degree Robbery, $30,000.00 no 10%, 1st Degree Aggravated Assault $30,000.00 no 10%.  Abughaida was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of bail.  Sturdy was released ROR.

Chief Rutigliano states that the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and would like to thank his detectives for their hard work and the many hours they put into this case.
